AI Music

As part of my research on the impact of AI music, I am interested in exploring UK music creators’ awareness of AI music creation services and AI-powered music tools. I am also keen to know how AI is currently being used in creative practice by UK music creators.

The role of copyright

As my research is focused on the impact of this technology on the music industry economy, the role of copyright plays a big part in how the livelihoods of musicians and the economic stability of music businesses may be affected.

For example, did you know that the UK Government plans to amend copyright law in the near future?

As part of the UK’s AI strategy – to become a global superpower in AI development – the Government made plans to allow AI companies to use human-created, copyright protected music to train their AI music systems through a process called text and data mining. Essentially, the planned amendment would allow AI companies to use your music to train their AI systems to generate new music without your permission and without paying you a licence fee.

Panic not! For now, those plans have been put on hold. In February 2023 the Government backtracked on the idea of not allowing rightsholders (music creators) a say in the matter. While this is a positive move for the UK music industry, we are now back in limbo wondering what their next plan will be.

It is possible that the UK will align with EU policy to make the amendment to copyright law and allow AI companies to use copyright protected music to train their AI systems, but offer rightsholders the opportunity to opt-out of this exception and protect their music.

As a UK music creator, what would you decied to do in this position? Allow AI companies to go ahead and use your music? Or opt-out and retain control over how your music is used by AI companies?

Please take the time to have your say by completing this short questionnaire.
